Engaged Voice is a site specific voice based sound installation, made and installed in the Edwardian Cloakroom, a disused public conveniences, in Bristol. The space is now an art space run by Bristol City Council. November 2014.
This is a full length recording (16 mins) of a participatory performance with 3 visitors to the space. It begins with myself singing back the audible sounds eminating from one half of the partitioned building to another (the 'ladies' side). I then walked out onto the street and sang into the open windows, before entering the other side ('gentlemen's') to join the visitors in the sound installation, created and installed in that very space.
It was dimly lit, and very resonant with its tiled interior. Free improvisation followed, using the installed pre-recorded voice as a basis to sing out with strangers, and experiment further with the remarkable acoustics of the space.
With thanks to the participants, whose names were not quite caught, in the excitement of it all.
