by Chloe Turpin. "“Irene’s Display is a modern myth. It is a slide found in a flea market. In order to be seen, it needs simultaneously the brilliance of the light and the darkness of the shade. Shade is what retains the light from going through. It keeps, preserves, holds as memory does.
Irene is a heroine whose death is good advice and is to be celebrated. Similar to a Greek Tragedy chorus, the feminine voices rise all together and bow to the drama. They call for meditation while breaking the mortuary silence. They are the condition for the sublime narrative, the fable of an imaginary folklore.
Images are the projection of a fantasized reality, a visual collage, and temporary environments hosting utterance. I sampled feminine voices, manipulated them electronically and mixed them semi-randomly, in a controlled chaos. I accompany them with my own voice. I tell what I know about Irene and what I imagine. She is both real and fictive but for sure she exists while her story is being told, a presence from the past.
My approach to making artwork tends to be very theatrical and I often think of myself as a kind of amateur stage director. I am interested in very specific personas and their unmediated environment. I work across video, performance, text, installation and music. I use the apparatus of expanded cinema to built narrative environments, temporary architectures of thoughts inspired by the real. My scenarios show characters struggling with existence, its absurdity or its cruelty and address themes such as the solitary, exhaustion and nostalgia. I like to think about the notion of space as a material translation of a mental state. My projects often function as topographies of an inner subjectivity and question the construct of the self. » - Cloe Turpin
