about

An excerpt from the 2013 voice and performance piece and drawing series, Luminaire, a process-based performance inspired by the reverse engineering in 2006 of the earliest known vocal recording, Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville’s phonautogram of the folk lullaby Au Clare De La Lune (1860).

This excerpt is a form of duet - it is from the call and response section between live and pre-recorded voices - of the song Au Clare De La Lune, sung in reverse. The oerformance video of this was then in turn reversed, to make a reverse-reverse engineered, and very uncanny sounding, new version of the song. It is a homage to the curious quality and haunting presence of the recorded voice.
