from Trans-Formations live - a Brilliant and Dark remix album (2012), released September 1, 2016
By Mark Young. “This piece draws from the melodies and rhythms of the remix score to explore the subject matter of the principle work within a wordless display. Beginning with a calm emergence of the piano on a borrowed rhythmic pulse the work aims to reflect on both the beauty and suffering of women throughout human history.

As a concept key to Of The Brilliant And the Dark is that of women as keepers of story and weavers of the collective memory of life, the work aims to explore the journey of those stories and memories themselves. The piece ends after a struggle with a peaceful renunciation of the challenge of the dance of human history; this can be seen as either a personal relinquishing of the struggle of life under oppression or the triumph over it.”

Mark Young is a composer/songwriter from North London. His process of composition looks at ways to innovate music using extra-musical influences, allowing the music an idiomatic language based on other sometimes unforeseen logics. Mark usually approaches musical language from a deliberately communicable stance, moving away via development and structure from a previously understood logic. Classically speaking the composer’s Scriabin, Stravinsky and Takemitsu are of highest influence however Philosopher Henri Bergson, Astronomer Carl Sagan and mathematician Everiste Galois are just as influential to the musical output. Mark’s music always emphasises the effect of music on the listener as the most important aspect of his works; both in aesthetic and experience.
